League – 7th May 2003
The game had all the beginnings of a disaster - parking difficult, horrible pitch, only one goal with a net, no corner flags, Wells and Tupper injured, Booth, Oliver Adams doubtful and a referee who started the game ignoring any flag from his assistants. The first half started with Corinthians clearly intent on trying to win the game and throw Carshalton's championship plans off course. There has always been great rivalry between the sides and just because Corinthians were out of the running for anything this season meant nothing. This was a matter of pride.
The first half came and went. Dan Coombes was consistent as ever and Stevie Greenslade carried on where he left off from the cup final with another solid performance. Mark Pucek was getting stuck in, as was Aaron Williams. Corinthians looked dangerous on the counter attack but on balance Carshalton had more of the play. However, no goals and no good for Carshalton who needed a win.
The second half started and the old saying 'a game of two halves' certainly became true. Graham Polley made some changes to protect tired players with Oliver Adams coming on and Richard Matthews doing a fine job when he came on. In the second half Robert Turner started playing the kind of football many boys dream of playing. This seemed to spur all the lads on and as Jack Mesure opened the scoring the goals began to flow.
Robert then scored two and Tyson Phillips one. Carshalton ended up winning the game and retaining their position at the top of the WSYL. Last night's game showed how important having a large squad really is. It was also a testimony to all the boys' professionalism and particularly those who do not always get a game. They were there when needed. They have contributed as much as anyone to the success of the side. They were great.
Luke Adams, Oliver Adams, David Booth, Dan Coombes, Mark Cowhig, Jack Goodman, Stevie Greenslade, Tom Lawler, Richard Mathews, Tyson Phillips, Mark Pucek, Jack Mesure, Robert Turner, Aaron Williams.
