Tooting & Mitcham United

1

Carshalton U16s

1 Tyson Phillips

WSYL – 5th October 2003

In all of my eight years watching junior football I have never seen a better game of football.  The players came with the right attitude, the parents (both sides) were fantastic and above all else the referee was a cut above.

Too often in youth football people take the negatives away with them.  Not this game. Every player, parent and supporter should be proud of the entertaining morning's play.  There are a lot of professional clubs who charge people to watch their players play and don't give value for money.  Tooting & Mitcham and Carshalton F.C did more than give value for money - they entertained for every minute of the game.  I suppose it is a reflection of what we watched that I can recall outstanding performances by not only our players, but by Steven Harp the Tooting & Mitcham defender who had so much to do to contain the Carshalton forward line - well done Steve.

Where do I start in giving praise?  Last week Graham Polley said he looked forward to seeing the Carshalton lads play at their best.  Well Graham today you saw them start to turn the magic on.  It just seems to me the better the opposition, the better the Carshalton boys play.  That is why the game was so good.

The first half was very evenly balanced and dare I say it - sorry but I am a Carshalton supporter - the Carshalton boys did not deserve to go into half time 1-0 down.  The goal which looked to be going wide deceived everyone.  Mark in goal was the first to put his hands up and say he should have gone for it. He certainly made up for it later in the game with some outstanding saves.

As the second half progressed there was a sense of  'it was not to be our day'.  There were loads of chances but we just could not find the net.  About half way through the second half the goal finally came - thank you Mr Phillips. For a short time after, Tooting looked to be on the ropes.  However, it is a mark of how good the Tooting lads are that they recovered and once again it was end to end stuff right up to the end.

I could write so much about this game but one word sums up what I and so many of the supporters felt  Magic lads!!

Players 10/10
Parents 10/10
Referee 10/10

Professional footballers learn from this example!!
