Surrey Cup 1st Round - 19th October 2003

The first home game of the season was nearly called off as the Surrey FA appointed referee was very concerned with the state of the pitch and particularly the goal mouth which has a lot of sand in it.  If Carshalton FC’s management committee need any more evidence how serious the position is regarding the ground, the fact that we had to do a lot to convince the official that the game should go ahead says it all.  What our pitch will look like later on in the season we just do not know.

The game started on a low beat with the Carshalton boys lacking their usual one touch footballing and content to try the difficult ball or just blast it long.  Whether this was down to a few late nights or the fact that it soon became clear that Jack Mesure and Chris Tupper had the legs of the Wandgas defence I am not sure.  However, it was from a long ball that Chris Tupper opened the scoring with a shot so fierce that the referee had to re-peg the net after blowing up for the goal.  Mr Measure who it has to be said has been through something of a goal scoring drought then returned to full form – Jack I think the only person who thought you would never score again was you- today everything went right three well taken goals proved it.  Another thundered goal from Chris Tupper and a very well taken goal by Darren "Poacher" Wells sent Carshalton in at half time 6-0 up with parents and supports very happy.

In the second half Graham Polley put on Dave Booth, Oliver Adams, and Mark Pucek and whilst there were no goals in the half, there were lots of chances.  Rob Turner had an excellent game, as did James Holland.  Stevie Greenslade was doing very well in the air and Aaron Wills was solid in midfield.  Jack Goodman had yet another great game and provided assurance down the left. Whilst we conceded two goals the boys should take heart from the fact that no matter how many changes Graham Polley makes this team always has the ability to step up a gear and produce exciting and entertaining football.  We have such depth in the squad, such versatile players that we never look weak.  A mention to the Wandgas players who kept battling we hope you do well in your league.  You certainly deserve to do so.

Finally a big thank you to all those mums who brought along food for after the game.  I know the boys appreciated it.  A specially mention to Pat Coombes for her bag of nipples or did she mean nibbles.
