WSYL - 14th December 2003
Westfield telephoned Steve Greenslade yesterday to say that their pitch was not playable and the game was off. Quick thinking and a lot of phone calls and the game was back on at home at Beddington. Well done to our Secretary.
Three weeks without a game and as Tyson said ‘I am having withdrawal symptoms’ so were many of the boys and did not it show. Whilst a few started a bit rusty SS Carshalton soon got under way and what was nice was they were playing the short game that is so impressive and they are so good at. Short tight passing demands skill and when Carshalton are on fire it is so good to watch. That is not to distract from Westfield who are a very good side and will be up at the top at the end of the season.
The game opened well for Carshalton with Jack Mesure having a couple of early chances which had he had more games he would have put away. In the end it was his strike partner Chris Tupper who put Carshalton ahead. However, Jack was soon on the score sheet to make it two nil. The third came from sheer persistence and hard work as Chris Tupper got another himself through to take Carshalton into half time three nil up.
For me the first half was not just about the excellent work the strikers put in but Stevie Greenslade's effort. This was probably the best first half he has played this season.
Behind the assured defence of Goodman, Greenslade, Wells and Adams L, who were outstanding, Mark Cowhig was so assured and did not put a foot wrong. What was also good about Mark's game was the calling and kicking.
The second half opened and Carshalton had the wind behind them. Carshalton’s midfield had been playing very well. Graham Polley often says if either Dan Coombes or Aaron Williams plays well we have a good game. Well Graham, Rob Turner, Tyson Phillips, Dan Coombes and Aaron Williams played well today and the performance particularly in the first half and first twenty minutes of the second was the best so far.
In the second half Chris Tupper, Stevie Greenslade and Dan Coombes made way for Mark Pucek (nice picture in the local paper Mark – not just a footballer!!!!), James Holland and Dave Booth. As the changes were made there was some concern that Carshalton’s shape would be spoilt. Never fear these lads just fitted in so well and Carshalton continued to create chance after chance. Unfortunately the tail end of the second half got a bit messy and there was a bit of kicking. However, two good sides played today, all the lads battled well and it was an enjoyable game to watch.
