WSYL - 21st December 2003

Arranging this game proved nothing short of a nightmare.  Steve and Elaine must have made 20+ phone calls following the Referees Secretary advising we did not have a ref allocated.  Monday no luck, Tuesday no luck and then Wednesday Woking complain that we have not advised the fixture.  Wednesday night and we were all phoning round and finally with Simon Goodman's help we finally got a ref.

Then Friday night Steve gets a phone call from a ref asking why we have not contacted him as he has been allocated by the West Surrey Youth League to do our game.  I can't write what was said but needless to say the game was on.

The game started slowly without Carshalton really firing.  The wind was playing its role and both goalkeepers were having to work hard to ensure they were in the right position to cover the long ball.  These conditions require lots of concentration by the goalkeepers and today showed what a great goalie Mark Cowhig is.  Whilst Mark has a great defence in front of him - yes m/s Wells, Adams L, Greenslade, Goodman, Lawler, Booth, and Holland I mean you - when strikers occasionally get through Mark rarely lets a goal in.  Look at the League table - goals for 15, goals against 2 - says it all. Not long into the first half after what I can only describe as a pin ball session in the Woking goalmouth the ball finally found its way out to Jack Mesure.  Jack as composed as ever sent the ball into the bottom left hand corner of the net and Carshalton advanced to one nil.

Woking seemed to come into the game after the goal and pressed Carshalton hard.  The Carshalton midfield of Turner, Coombes, Williams and Phillips battled hard and Carshalton went into the second half one up. The second half started and Carshalton had the now stronger wind against them.  After a sustained period of end to end play, high balls and mid field battles Tyson Phillips was put through and took an excellent goal to make it 2-0.  After Carshalton's second goal and the ref making a few interesting decisions - one of which was a clear penalty when Rob Turner had his legs taken away in the Woking area, the game degenerated a little.  However, by this time the game was won and Carshalton took the points. During the game Jack Mesure and Dan Coombes had to come off with injuries. We wish them well as we do Stevie Greenslade who is recovering from a fracture.

Have a great Christmas; lots of rest and let's get prepared to resume in the second half of the season.  We are well placed.  In the League Played 6, Won 5, Drawn 1, Lost 0, For 15, Against 2 and 16 points, in the Surrey Cup through to the last 16, next game against Carshalton Athletic mid January and in the League Cup into the Semi final against Westfield.  Well done lads and thanks to all the parents and friends your support is much appreciated
