WSYL Cup Semi Final - 11th January 2004
After some great co-operation between Westfield FC, Carshalton FC and the West Surrey Youth League, this semi final was on and we all looked forward to the game. I would like to say a big thank you to everyone who made today's game possible but a special thank you to Elaine & Steve Greenslade and Dave Workman at WSYL who worked so hard to ensure the game went ahead.
The game started and it was clear the weather was going to play a big part in the result. Carshalton started with the wind against them and despite being on top from the start, Carshalton were battling to keep the upper hand. Westfield capitalised on this and through a silly defensive mishap Carshalton ended up conceding the first goal.
Carshalton worked hard to battle their way back into the game and not long before half time Carshalton equalised following Tyson Phillips’ taking a goal. Game very much on as we went into half time.
At the restart Carshalton had the wind at their backs and the game moved onto one way traffic. Chris Tupper took a great headed goal and Aaron Williams moved Carshalton onto 3-1 and really the result was beyond doubt. Jamie Carshalton’s coach had given some very good advice in the process. Some of the Westfield players carried on working hard, others just wanted to moan - always a shame when you get good players less than focused!!. With little more than 10 minutes to go, Graham Polley made his first substitutions bringing on David Booth, Mark Pucek and James Holland for Jack Mesure, Rob Turner and Tom Lawler.
After a further couple of minutes, the Westfield manager seemed to lose the plot and suggested to the referee that we had played 4 substitutes. This was very disappointing and totally unfounded - even their players were telling him he was mistaken. Thankfully after quite a delay, the referee and a WSYL representative sorted things out and proved that Carshalton had in fact made 3 substitutions. At the restart with about two minute to go, the skies darkened (I'm sure nothing to do with the next goal) and Dave Booth fired home the fourth and Carshalton had booked their day in the final.
Well done lads - great result.
