Surrey Cup Quarter Final - 15th February 2004
Carshalton U16s progressed through to the semi final of the Surrey Cup but only just! On a small and very heavy pitch Carshalton were never going to be able to play their usual passing game and being 3 players down on a school trip and with Luke Adams and Chris Tupper unwell/injured we were down to just eleven.
The game started and it was clear AFC Ewell were going to make a game of it and knew how to play on the pitch. Whilst following some good work by Oliver Adams, Tyson Phillips put Carshalton ahead after 10 minutes and Carshalton took this lead into half time you just had the feeling that AFC Ewell were going to get a goal back. The Carshalton boys were trying to play football but this was not the pitch to do it on. Despite Graham Polley telling the lads to pump the ball up front they insisted on playing the short sharp passes they are usually so good at. Unfortunately the pitch was holding up the ball and AFC Ewell were able to intercept the passes. As full time approached AFC Ewell were gaining in confidence and despite some excellent work from stand in goalkeeper Stevie Greenslade the inevitable happened and AFC Ewell equalised - game very much on! The unthinkable then happened and AFC Ewell got another and Carshalton found themselves fighting to stay in the Cup. Darren Wells saved the day with a brave header. Extra time came and went and we faced penalties.
Elaine Greenslade now knows what Lorraine Cowhig has faced many times in Carshalton's history, her boy was to be the lad who was to be so important in determining whether Carshalton were to progress to the Semi final. Didn't he do well! AFC Ewell's first went wide. Jack Mesure fired home for Carshalton, Luke and Tyson hit theirs in and then Robbie who had had such a good game fired over. Enter Mr Greenslade who saved the next AFC Ewell penalty and put Carshalton back in the driving seat. Up steps David Booth, who seeing his mum not wanting to look, starts laughing. The rest of the team watch standing arm in arm in the centre circle the supporters go silent - the whistle goes and Dave strikes the ball into the net. Game won.
Another big game next week and our best wishes to Dan Coombes who sustained an injury.
Stevie Greenslade, Dave Booth, James Holland, Darren Wells, Rob Turner, Oliver Adams, Aaron Williams, Dan Coombes, Mark Pucek, Tyson Phillips, Jack Mesure, Chris Tupper, Luke Adams.
