Surrey Cup Semi Final - 21st March 2004
If you were a neutral, this was probably the most entertaining Sunday morning you will have spent watching football. Carshalton opened by far the stronger and had much of the first half play. That’s not taking anything away from T&M who did well to hold the Carshalton formation. The scoring was opened by Tyson Phillips who did well to round the T&M goal keeper when he found himself one on one.
T&M came back strong although the Carshalton defence looked ever comfortable and as we moved to half time Carshalton looked looked to have the run of play. The second half started much the same for the first ten minutes and then T&M got real conviction and started to play really well and looked worthy of getting an equaliser. About half way through the half they did just that and game very much on.
Carshalton quickly went ahead again following a Chris Tupper run and cut back to Tyson Phillips who put a great ball into Oliver Adams who despite brave efforts from the T&M goalkeeper put the ball in the back of the net. 2-1 to Carshalton. However, T&M still had more to say.
With Carshalton having a number of injuries Graham Polley was forced to make a substitute as normal time approached. T&M capitalised on this and following a bit of a mix up T&M once again equalised. Question was it off side - the assistant ref flagged but the Referee did not give off side and the game went into extra time.
To my way of thinking this was the true final of the Surrey Cup. The teams on the pitch are the best in Surrey and it was just a shame matters had to be settled by penalties after a goaless extra time. Still that’s how it has to be and all credit to the T&M players for winning through to the final. We wish them well.
