Uxbridge Colts

WSYL - 11th April 2004

What a pleasant way to spend an Easter Sunday, sun shining, and top quality football from both sides.

The game started with both sides testing each other, trying to find the flowing football they are both capable of playing.  At first it was evenly balanced and if anything the Uxbridge forwards looked the sharper.  As the game moved on Carshalton’s midfield started to drive forward and with Tyson Phillips battling hard up front Carshalton began to dominate.  The first goal came following sustained pressure and Carshalton getting a corner.  A well-taken Oliver Adams kick found Darren Wells un-marked and as sure as Eggs is Eggs (Happy Easter) Darren headed home.  The game then moved more Carshalton’s way as the boys began to put together pass after pass and right up to half time Carshalton seemed to dominate.

After the interval Uxbridge came out on fire.  I heard their manager’s team talk and it was centred on Uxbridge being the first side to beat Carshalton and test the goalie.  Well for the first twenty minutes of the second half they certainly did that.  However, as ever Carshalton’s defence looked as solid as a rock and Mark Cowhig in goal was as assured as ever.  As we moved to full time Carshalton got more and more of the play with Jack Mesure going close on a number of occasions.  Carshalton got the ball in the back of the net only to have the goal disallowed.  (I was in line and it was just off side).  Nevertheless, with about five minutes to go Tyson Phillips put the game beyond doubt with a well-taken shot in the top corner.

All credit to Uxbridge who battle right to the end and played such a big part in making this game so entertaining.  Their boys were a credit to their manager.  Speaking to the ref after the game he said ‘ that was a good game both sides did really well’.

My man of the match well that’s difficult.  For me it was between David Booth and Darren Wells with David just edging it.  At the end of the day they all did well.  Great game lads  - oh and welcome back Mr Polley we were all pleased to see you fully recovered.
