WSYL - 2nd May 2004
Thank you lads from a very proud Treasurer and dad. Not only did you all play well but you played for each other, as a team and today you proved to everyone you are the most consistent side at under 16 in the WSYL.
If we thought Hayes late arrival at the game was an indication of the way they were to play we were very wrong. Hayes showed total commitment and were out to prove they could beat the unbeaten Carshalton FC. They battled for each and every ball and made Carshalton prove they are true League Champions. I have to commend the Hayes No. 17 who was outstanding and caused what is one of the best defences in the WSYL no end of problems. The Hayes supporters were also great and never stopped encouraging their boys. After the first game in this double header we heard that T&M had lost one of their games against Ashford 3-1 and knew we only needed to win the second game against Hayes to retained the Championship. The manager did not tell the boys. This was a good decision as within 5 minutes of the start Carshalton scored and despite Hayes continuing to battle at the end of the day Carshalton went on to a convincing 4-0 win.
It was so nice that Graham Polley could deliver the news of the title win in front of the parents and confirm that the side were once again League Champions. Yes we had all been disappointed not to retain the League Cup and win the Surrey Cup but the big one for any good side is the League Championship and Carshalton FC has done what so few good sides have done – they have retained the title. In doing this they have remained undefeated - Yes Rita just like Arsenal.
Whilst everyone was delighted some were sad as this may be the last game the boys play together. If this is the case I sincerely hope that every boy looks back on the last two seasons as the best time they have had in football and the friendships that have grown up last for many, many years.
Thank you Graham, Mark, Jamie, Peter, Steve and Elaine. Thank you Lorraine great coffee and cake, thank you Steve, Ray and Simon for running the line. Thank you parents for supporting the lads. Thank you to the Committee at Carshalton F C. Thank you to the WSYL Committee and Lynn Francis and Dave Workman in particular.
Finally thanks lads- SIMPLY THE BEST!
Oh by the way take this one with you in all you do in your lives – fail to prepare, prepare to fail.
