2 Ben Stokoe, Ruaridh Geddes

Friendly – 2nd August 2003

This was the debut of the Carshalton U9s and this proved to be a very useful exercise against Roundshaw Colts of the Epsom & Ewell League.  It didn’t take long for the boys to gel and they played some very exciting passing football.  Carshalton opened the scoring in the first half when a corner from Jordan on the right was caught perfectly on the half volley by Ben and the ball flew high into the net at the near post.  It was fitting that the skipper should score the first goal for the team.  Arran threatened on a number of occasions with his pace.

Carshalton continued to make chances, with Roundshaw's keeper making one save in particular from Luke early in the second half.  Ben had a long range shot that just went wide and Ruaridh hit the post from a narrow angle after a short corner from Lewis.  With a couple of minutes left, Lewis closed down a defender, won the ball and laid it back to Ruaridh, who smashed a long range shot high into the net.  Quite a goal!

Just when everything looked settled, Roundshaw broke through, but they were then confronted by our last line of defence.  Daniel dived at the forward’s feet, then there were several flailing legs and arms, and when the dust settled it was Daniel who emerged with the ball in his hands.

Everyone can be very proud of their first performances in the famous Myrtle Green.  Daniel was brave in goal when called upon.  Our defensive partnerships of Conor, Joseph and Owen looked very solid.  Some outstanding tackling there.  In midfield Arran, Ben, Luke and Ruaridh provided a platform for Jordan and Lewis who worked tirelessly up front.

Pre season training now starts on Tuesday and we have a very challenging friendly against The Wolves of Division 1 of the Espom & Ewell League next Sunday.

Our thanks to Roundshaw Colts’ management for arranging the fixture and good luck for the coming season.  Finally many thanks for all the support we received.  It makes such a difference for the boys to hear your positive encouragement.
