Friendly – 31st August 2003
On first inspection, this would appear to have been a mauling. However, as we have stressed, the results do not matter in friendlies, only the performance. In truth the scoreline was a bit harsh on Carshalton, though last season's WSYL champions did show why they are the title holders. Too many of the goals conceded by Carshalton were down to non existent marking and this is something we can work on. Tuesday's training session will concentrate on areas that need improving.
What does not need improving is the level of commitment shown by the team - a very pleasing aspect of the performance. Our man of the match had to be Arran, who scored a hattrick and caused their defence problems all game, although Ben had another impressively commanding game in midfield. Perhaps we can point to the fact that we had a bare 7 players and were missing Owen, Ruaridh and Lewis, who will be back next week for our final friendly. But no excuses - Beecholme were the better side and showed what can be done when a team learns to play together. We wish them all the best for their coming season. We would really like to pit our wits against them later in the season when we too have had a chance to play as a team.
Positives to take out of this are the never-say-die attitude, Arran's hattrick against the champions and the encouragement of the parents again. What we need to improve on are defending as a unit and as individuals, awareness of holding our positions on the pitch and learning to stay on our feet. This will come with experience and as long as ALL players continue to show commitment in training and in matches
PS - Daniel in goal was not at fault for the goals - he needs more protection from the team - we must defend as a unit.
