Banstead Rangers

3

Carshalton U9s

1 Arran Nurse

Friendly – 9th September 2003

Carshalton U9s played their best football of the season in this friendly against Banstead Rangers of Division 1 of the Tandridge League.  The scoreline does not reflect the performance.  Countless chances were created and there were many near misses.  We opened the scoring in the first half when Arran shot from an acute angle and the ball went between the keeper's legs.  In the 30th minute of the first half (!!) Banstead equalised from a long throw-in that was headed in over the keeper.

After a lot of pressure from Carshalton at the start of the second half, it was Banstead who took the lead against the run of play.  We were punished for our only defensive lapse of the game and the ball was rolled into an empty net.  With time and light running out, Banstead sealed victory with a crisp volley reminiscent of Neil McCann's for Scotland against the Faroe Islands last Saturday (I realise not many of you probably saw this).

The result is not important - the manner of the performance was hugely encouraging.  Our defence did not deserve to concede 3.  They stuck to their task well and Daniel was very solid with excellent handling.  Our midfield were tenacious and caused constant problems.  Up front we created a host of chances, but the ball just wouldn't fall for us. We can take a lot of heart from this showing and the boys can be pleased with the comments and praise they received from Banstead's management, both about their skills and their sportsmanship.

We wish Banstead all the best for this season, and would like to take up their offer of a return friendly later in the season.  Well done all.
