WSYL Cup  – 12th October 2003

Carshalton's first home game of the season was a real cracker.  Molesey Juniors are from the Premier Division and have been together for a while - and it showed.  It is clear they have been well drilled.  However, Carshalton were not outclassed by any means and probably deserved a draw from the contest.  Both teams played some good football and gave 100%.  Molesey had a bit more artistry and were more physical, but all within the laws and spirit of the game.  In a game of few clear-cut chances it was a set piece that was to settle the game.  Molesey were awarded a free kick just before halftime, outside the box on the angle, and the shot was so well struck that Daniel could only palm it into the roof of the net.  Next time we will make sure we have a wall, eh lads.

Though we huffed and puffed, we found Molesey a difficult side to break down and their keeper was only called on to make saves on 3 occasions.  At the other end, Daniel made some more impressive saves (he really has no fear), Conor played another fine game and Owen was our man of the match.  He played to the potential we spotted during the summer trials.  He won everything at the back and did not deserve to end up on the losing side.

The midfield is where we need improvement.  Can't fault the effort and attitude of the players, which was first class, but we do need to get the ball down and pass.  When we do that we are impressive.  Without this we get ourselves into trouble.  And up front, Lewis was too isolated.  Maybe we should have pushed Arran up front with him earlier to give us other options.

Still, judging from the cheers of our supporters and some of the comments of the opposition support, we did pretty well today.  Though we can be proud of the performance, we know where we can get better.  We need to be a bit more attentive, close down opponents in midfield and support the forwards when we attack.  However, the positives from this performance far outweigh the disappointment of defeat.  Well played boys.  Let's keep improving together.

Many thanks to our referee Mike Malin who ran the game with quiet authority.  And special thanks to the ladies who supplied the tea, coffees and bacon rolls - Andrea, her mum and Sharon.  I think we have a hit on our hands there!!!

Next week we are at home to Hampton Youth in the league, and will be without Arran, who will be greatly missed.  Don't worry, Andrea has arranged stand-ins for the bacon rolls!!
