WSYL – 19th October 2003
Carshalton continued their 100% record in the league, though they did concede their first goal of the campaign. Hampton Youth created a few problems, but Carshalton enjoyed the majority of possession and territorial advantage and deserved their win. Carshalton took the initiative right from the start as they unsettled their visitors with some aggressive running and well timed passing. Carshalton looked to have opened the scoring when Ruaridh crashed a long range shot against the underside of the bar, but the referee waved play on. Carshalton soon took the lead with a training ground move. Ruaridh eventually knocked in the cross which was met at the far post by Lewis, whose shot had too much power for the Hampton keeper.
As the half drew to a close, Hampton's main dangerman went on a run and managed to break through the defence. Just as he shot, Daniel came screaming out of goal to block his shot with his face. A fantastically brave save to keep us in the lead. At halftime we brought on Joseph and Ben for Luke and Jordan, who had both given much improved performances in midfield.
In the second half we had plenty of chances to score, but either overdid it or shot too early. Still, when the second goal came, it was well worth the wait. Following a fine passing move, Lewis crashed in a fantastic drive into the roof of the net, giving the keeper no chance. To be honest at the time there looked to be no way back for Hampton. Conor and Owen had been very solid again in defence and with Ben shoring up the midfield and Joseph supporting Lewis up front, it seemed most likely that further Carshalton goals would come. However, with time almost up, Hampton's top player went on another excellent run and laid on a pass in the box for a fine rising shot that Daniel managed to get a hand on, but could not stop from entering the net. Within a couple of minutes it was all over.
Many thanks to Hampton Youth for their friendliness throughout the morning. We enjoyed having you at Carshalton. Hope you enjoyed the bacon rolls!
After the game we retired to the clubhouse for teas, coffees and bacon rolls thanks to Sharon Cooley and Helen Gardner who did a fine stint in the kitchen - we all appreciated it. This is becoming a very popular feature of our home games. Next week we travel to Barnes to face Rocks Lane Rovers who beat Manorcroft United there 3-0 today. We look forward to the challenge.
