WSYL – 9th November 2003
Carshalton U9s dealt a first league defeat to Whitton Town whilst maintaining their own 100% league record. In a highly competitive game, both sides played entertaining football and it is a small miracle that only 1 goal was scored in the match. Whitton's main threat was from set pieces, which we defended well. You could see how they had been scoring so many goals. However Carshalton's defence stood strong throughout with Daniel as safe as ever in goal and Conor and Owen "The Rock" Roberts dominating their forwards. Conor was hampered with croup (characterized by a loud cough that resembles the barking of a seal, difficulty breathing, and a grunting noise or wheezing during breathing - see, the Internet has it's uses), but gave another impressive display for 40 minutes.
In midfield we hunted in packs and Joseph, Luke, Ben and Ruaridh gave them little or no time to play. Both Ben and Luke had by far and away their best games of the season - what did you two have for breakfast? Up front, Arran and Lewis posed plenty of problems and with a bit more luck they could both have had a couple. Their running with and off the ball was extremely pleasing to watch from my point of view.
We started off like a train and forced Whitton onto the back foot. the Whitton defence creaked a couple of times, but kept us out until midway through the first half. A free kick outside the box was hammered into the wall by Ruaridh and the ball rebounded to him. His first time shot hit the inside of the post and rebounded to Arran who made no mistake with his follow up to put us into the lead. We had a couple of very good chances to extend our lead, but failed to finish.
The second half was more even and as it wore on, Whitton applied pressure on the Carshalton goal. They were always dangerous from free kicks and corners with some fine set piece moves. Carshalton weathered the storm and ran out deserved winners in what was the best game of football I have seen at this level. All Carshalton players played to their potential and this was an improvement on last week, as the opposition today was a lot stronger. It was the best team performance as well.
Credit to a strong Whitton side who battled throughout and never gave up. They are a credit to their manager and their club. We look forward to visiting you in December. Next week we host Tooting & Mitcham who we played in our first league game. Hopefully we will play to our potential again and show just how much we have improved since then.
Once again, many thanks to all supporters from both sides who made the atmosphere a very pleasant one for the kids. And of course to Andrea and Gaynor for the bacon rolls, teas and coffees - did we really shift 60?!!
