WSYL – 16th November 2003
Carshalton U9s continued their impressive form with a convincing 4-1 win over Tooting & Mitcham. Despite most of the pressure, Carshalton laboured to create clearcut chances early on and it was not until midway through the half that the breakthrough came. Arran sent a through ball to Ruaridh, who beat the defence and bore down on the keeper before firing low into the net. Soon after it was 2-0, when Jordan followed up a shot like all good forwards and pounced on the rebound to sent the ball high into the net. Just as it appeared that the floodgates might open, Tooting & Mitcham pulled on back with a fine strike that gave the keeper no chance.
At halftime the match was finely poised and it was clear that the next goal would be crucial. Carshalton pressed right from the restart and had some fine passing moves that were matched by some excellent dogged defending from Tooting & Mitcham. The game was settled as a contest when Jordan added his second, finishing well when finding the space in front of goal, once again giving the keeper no chance. Carshalton were on Easy Street when Arran Nurse rifled in the fourth soon after. What a strike! The Tooting & Mitcham keeper had a good game making a couple of fine saves and generally being very solid - but he was not given any chance with any of the goals he conceded.
Tooting & Mitcham boys were a credit to their management as they continued to press for goals. They forced one good save from Daniel in goal, but other than that did not really look like pulling back another. I'm really not sure how they only have one point this season. They are much better than that.
Thanks to the Tooting & Mitcham management who commented on how much we have improved as a team since we played on the first game of the season. I'm sure they will pick up points when they play teams from the lower half of the division. Another game played in excellent spirit.
Captain Luke Gardner harried throughout the game, Joseph made a brave comeback in midfield after injuring himself when heading a ball while in defence, Ben was superb in defence and then in midfield, Conor and Owen were... well what we have come to expect from Conor and Owen. Lewis gave us a link between the midfield and the forwards when he came on in the second half with his vision.
Next week is the top of the table clash as unbeaten Hampton Wanderers visit Beddington Park. They will arrive in confident mood after travelling to Whitton and coming away with a 2-0 win. It should be a cracker.
