WSYL – 30th November 2003
Although we scored 6 goals, this was not a convincing performance. For some reason we bunched together and kept the game narrow in the first half and did not do what we are good at - passing the ball. Even so, we did manage to score 3 goals, mainly due to individual skills. Jordan planted a shot wide of the keeper, Lewis did likewise and Arran finished off a mazy run through the defence with a fine composed finish. Shortly before the break Cheam struck back as everyone charged forward looking for more goals.
Changes were made in the second half and a reminder was given about how we are supposed to play. Thankfully the boys responded with a much improved performance. Further goals were added by Ruaridh (was that really a right foot strike?), then Arran raced through to plant his close range shot high into the net and Ruaridh rounded off the scoring with another fine shot which gave the keeper no chance. In fact the Cheam keeper gave a fantastic performance in the second half and stopped at least 4 goalbound efforts that he had no right to save - well played young man. We also missed a penalty and hit the "woodwork" twice in the second half as we at last went back to what we are good at.
Cheam's players never gave up and their attitude to the game was a credit to their manager. I would also like to thank the supporters for the positive encouragement given to both sides.
Improvements will be required for next week when Manorcroft United visit Beddington Park. I'm sure the boys will raise their game to meet the challenge. See you all at training.
The previous evening was spent at an Abba night at the Croydon Hilton as the parents celebrated Christmas early. Quite an eye opener I can tell you - a few dark horses in our midst. As the wine flowed, so did the banter and the creative juices - resulting in a triple challenge being organised for later in the season. The families have been split into 2 teams (Team Andrew and Team Malcolm) and there will be games between the children, the dads and then the mums!! I think I know which game will be the most energetic and competitive, after seeing the mums on the dancefloor!! Many thanks to Sharon Cooley for organising the night out - I'm sure everyone will agree that it was well worth it. Special note of thanks to Andrea for cooking the bacon on Sunday, despite going to bed at 5am - and also to her helpers, especially Lisa, who was looking a little fragile.
