WSYL – 14th December 2003

Sunday's defeat at the hands of Whitton Town will hopefully inspire the boys to work harder in training and during our forthcoming games.  We just didn't get going, despite having the majority of possession.  We did not adjust to the sloping, bobbly pitch, which our opponents played the perfect tactics on.  For once, our normally very solid defence had an off day and too many players did not get involved like we have done all season.  It was as if we expected to walk on the pitch and take the points home.  We are only where we are through hard work and doing what the managers tell you.  Hopefully it was just one of those games - after all, Chelsea lost to Bolton, Rangers to Dunfermline (the one bright spot in the day) and Raith lost at home to Inverness Caledonian Thistle - who would have believed it!!

Whitton Town opened the scoring when we failed to clear our lines and the ball was knocked in from close range.  Their second was when their lethal striker Elle was left in acres of room and she finished comfortably.  The third was a penalty after one of those "A Question of Sport - What Happened Next" questions - I'll spare the details!

Whitton deserved their win as they played to their strengths and we didn't.  In the whole game we only had 3 strikes at goal and we are not going to win many games like that.  It is never easy after such a long journey and next time we would do things differently - this season is a learning exercise for everyone.

And the positives...well I suppose the burden of having the league's only 100% record has been lifted... I was very pleased with our parents' comments after the game... I was pleased with the sportsmanship shown by all players... we are so much better than this performance and I expect us to prove it on Sunday.  We need to get back to basics - defenders defending, midfielders passing and tackling and forwards getting shots on target.  We can do it when we play as a team.
