WSYL – 11th January 2004
A very disappointing result and a well below par performance. We were second in just about every department - notable exceptions being Owen in defence and Arran in midfield. In the first 20 minutes it was like we had not turned up. Take nothing away from Worcester Park who showed what can be done with application and hard work. They took their chances and were well drilled, using the sloping pitch to their advantage in both halves. Unfortunately we just had an off day.
Having said all that, we created enough chances to make it a much closer scoreline, but I'm afraid we just were not good enough on the day.
Next week we have another very tough game and I'm hoping that we all turn up ready to play like we did in the first half of the season and don't take things for granted. We have been steadily improving in training, but have not played particularly well throughout December and January. Now is the time to roll your sleeves up and work hard for each other. Our passing can be so much better when we switch on and are focussed and we need to get back to creating and putting away our chances. Maybe we gained a false confidence by winning our first 9 games? We have to remember that the reason we did so well was that we all played for each other and looked like a team. It has been disappointing that we have not gone on from there, but we have a chance to do just that on Sunday. 3 indifferent results do not make a bad team and I'm confident our boys will respond to this and bounce back.
One pleasing aspect of the day was the good sportsmanship of the players after such a disappointing performance, and also the continual encouragement of the parents. Remember that any player who is not trying and not doing what is asked of them will be taken off for the benefit of those who are. You are all good players when you are at your best, and you will need to be at your best in every game until the end of the season.
Training on Wednesday is at Stanley Park High School from 7pm. Let's start the recovery there.
