Friendly – 13th March 2004
Talk about a game of 2 halves! Carshalton appeared comfortably in control in the first half. Goals from Jordan (2) and Ben gave us a 3-1 lead. Changes were made at halftime, and we lost our shape and cutting edge. We stopped tackling and marking and a number of players didn't seem particularly interested. It was a great pity that we ended up losing so heavily, as we had played so well in the first half.
Jordan gave us the lead with a shot off the post when put through on the keeper. Chipstead equalised with a good goal, but we retook the lead soon after when Jordan finished from a very acute angle. Ben added the third when he and Owen competed for an excellent pull back from Lewis to finish from close range. We combined well, defended well, competed well and played as a team.
Now can someone please explain what happened in the second half? The least said about the second half performance, the better. Arran and Lewis's combination up front was the only bright spot. To be fair, Chipstead made a number of changes themselves and looked much stronger. I apologise to Chipstead for not giving them enough credit for their own performance in the second half. They certainly played well, but it was really disappointing that we did not match them for effort. I will highlight the goal of the game. That howitzer of a free kick was something special!!
A word of thanks to Joseph for going in goal in Dan's absence. None of the goals were down to Joseph and he made a couple of very good saves in the first half. When you have 3 players bearing down on you without a defender in sight, the goalie is always going to be second favourite.
Fortunately Chipstead have given us the opportunity to redeem ourselves when we travel to their ground on Saturday 27 March (9.30am kick off). I hope we give a better account of ourselves and actually play in both halves.
