Old Pastovians

1

Carshalton Vets

1 Gavin Dykes

Friendly – 24th September 2005

A hard fought match (and I don't mean the incident where their diminutive but exceptionally aggressive midfielder elbowed Wayne Stone in the stomach for no apparent reason).  The unfortunate loss of Peter Culham (sounds worse than it was, he's still alive) very early on in the game meant that the strike force was severely diminished.  Scott Funnell created difficulties for Pastovians' defence with his speed and control.  After many, many opportunities, Gavin Dykes scored a superb goal.  It was substantially a solo effort, but arising from a sublime pass from Kevin Sullivan (who played the entire match suffering badly from pulled hamstring sustained the week before - they breed 'em tough in Scotland).

We really should have won.  However, an unfortunate mix-up between goalie (who up to that point had had a good game), and left back, let them equalise (happily not scored by the diminutive but exceptionally aggressive midfielder).  In central and right midfield, Gavin Dykes, Sam Karlsson and Chris Moggridge worked tirelessly to create chances and prevent Pastovians advancing.

Things were a bit quiet on left midfield but if, and when, Tony the Dutchman returns to full fitness, and his confidence in front of goal returns, we can be hopeful that goals will once again come from that side also.  Wayne Stone who was Captain for the day was of the view that the back four had been well-organised and solid.
